This includes being able to pay necessary bills at home, putting aside for the things you want, and taking care of your family. Show them real need, appeal to their generous hearts, and they will surprise you with their creativity and perseverance in doing good for others. The Catholic Kid’s Guide to Stewardship is based on the seven corporal works of mercy on the belief that even the youngest child can make a difference. The author has collected here some memorable and touching true stories of what kids have accomplished — and are still accomplishing! She centers each chapter on Scripture and the teachings of Jesus, offering passages kids can read on their own or with their families. Also included are idea starters that suggest ways kids can be stewards, depending on their age, gifts, and inclination. Each chapter also contains a Note to Parents and Catechists, emphasizing practical points to watch for or to discuss with children, plus a Stewardship Prayer. The book concludes with a chapter on stewardship resources. Written for ages 9 to 12, The Catholic Kid’s Guide to Stewardship provides inspiration not only for children but for adults as well. An invaluable resource for religious educators and parents!

He makes statements that begin “Blessed are…” and then surprises us. Blessed are you who are poor, who hunger now, who weep now, who are hated because you follow Jesus. You are blessed! Jesus teaches that God will lift up the humble, the last shall be first, the merciful will receive mercy. He moves us beyond strict rules and teaches us that the heart of the law is to have mercy. He teaches us to love one another.

So how does Jesus want us to live? He wants us to treat each other with kindness.

In Loyola Kids Book of Saints, the first book in the Loyola Kids series, author Amy Welborn answers these questions with exciting and inspiring stories, real-life applications, and important information about these heroes of the church. This delightful collection of saints’ lives, written in a storybook style for children eight to twelve, explains how saints becomes saints, why we honor them, and how they help us even today. Divided thematically, the book features more than sixty saints from all over the world and from all across time, including our newest saints, such as St. Katharine Drexel; popular saints, such as St. Anthony of Padua; and Blesseds, such as Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. Each story tells about a saint and encourages readers to consider how they might apply what they learn from the story to their everyday lives.

This unique and creative resource offers delightful stories about the saints as well as patterns and simple instructions for making figures of the saints using a soft and flexible foam material. Each chapter includes:
• reasons why a particular saint can positively influence the children;
• objectives for each lesson;
• symbols for each saint;
• suggestions for presenting the material and creating the characters;
• the story/dialogue, which can be read or performed;
• vocabulary words and a prayer. Choose the material that best fits into your regular lesson plan. Or use the stories and characters during your seasonal or inter generational assemblies. Saints are God’s gift to all of us. Their lives show us and our children that we are all called to holiness. They are truly our friends and teachers. Every catechist and religion teacher will want Saints, Our Friends and Teachers on their resource shelf.

We can teach them about their faith, and in this case about the sacraments, she says, but a hands-on approach works even better because it involves the whole child. These simple, beautiful, and indispensable activities from an experienced DRE offer ten creative ways to celebrate and learn about each of the seven sacraments. They can be used by any catechist, beginners as well as veterans, but also by parents because they offer a great way to teach about the sacraments at home. The activities include visits to the church, prayers, crafts, Scripture readings, stories about the saints, sacrament discussions, and outreach suggestions. What a great gift book for catechists and parents!

It is perfect for parishes who schedule a children s Liturgy of the Word as well as for those who simply want materials to prepare children for the weekly liturgy. It is geared to ages 5-8 and for each week of the lectionary cycle there are creative hand-out activity sheets that involve children in the scriptural message. Best of all, it offers informative background notes and directions for liturgy leaders, parents, catechists, and all who work with parish children. This is a must-have resource for every parish.

This comprehensive book contains complete liturgies of the word for all three liturgical years, cycles A, B and C organized according to the liturgical calendar. The book’s wonderful introduction gives a great overview of the nature and function of the Liturgy of the Word for children and describes the order used in the book. For each Sunday, the following items are included: Introduction, Sign of the Cross, Lighting of the Candles, “Sorry”, Gloria, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel reading, Discussion, Activity, Creed and Closing Prayer. The bonus feature of the book is a great illustration/activity that can be reproduced each week. These activities are more than just coloring pages. Many are crafts, activities, paper dolls, worksheets and much more. I would recommend that this book be used not only by catechists, but also by parents looking to make the Sunday Liturgy of the Word truly come alive in their own homes. I refer to this reference frequently. You’ll be happy that you invested in this resource for your students and for your own family!

With the same classroom-tested style that made our Big Book of Ideas for Children’s Faith Formation so popular, this book shows you step-by-step how to make learning fun for children ages 3 to 8, and beyond. Your favorite characters from the first book return to lead us through Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and a few secular holidays, too. Short stories, crafts, games, and traditional decorations remind them of the time-honored customs of the season. Prayers and devotions – some new, some traditional – keep all the fun centered on faith, and might just become lifetime habits. If you teach in Catholic schools or CCD classes, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without this book. If you’re a homeschooler, this is just the help you’ve been looking for. If you’re a parent or grandparent looking for some rainy-day fun, here’s fun you can feel good about.

This little book, written in a friendly, encouraging, and helpful tone by the former editor-in-chief of a major catechetical publisher, provides that willing beginner with useful information on such topics as an overview of child development, learning styles, organizing one’s teaching space, and planning the lesson. The author makes the whole experience much less intimidating than that new volunteer ever imagined it would be.

The Catechist’s Toolbox by Joe Paprocki is an invaluable collection of techniques, tips, methodologies, and advice for all catechists who must learn on the job. Paprocki shares the wisdom he has gleaned in two decades as a catechist, high school teacher, and religious educator. Employing the metaphor of a homeowner’s toolbox, Paprocki explains how a catechist is like a do-it-yourself builder who needs the right collection of tools to do the job; throughout the book, Paprocki explains what the tools are, what they can do, and how to use them skillfully and effectively. The Catechist’s Toolbox will help first-time catechists feel at home in their new role and will empower catechists at all levels of experience to thrive as educators of the faith.

They need exercises that train the mind or move the heart. For this reason, Catholic teachers and parents will appreciate these one hundred thoughtfully crafted activities drawn from the new universal Catechism of the Catholic Church. The worksheets, memory games, Bible studies, etc. in this book require little preparation or materials and are designed to supplement any catechetical text or program for children in grades 1 through 8. Though simple to use, these exercises uncover some of the depth and richness of Catholic doctrine and practice. Topics of the activities are organized according to the four pillars of the Catechism — Faith, Sacraments, Morality and Prayer. Each activity is self-contained, perforated to tear out and reproduce for group use. Whether it is memorizing the Creed, understanding the Bible, or learning to pray, these exercises will enrich the faith of children and those who teach them.

A family interaction page follows, featuring real-life applications that kids and their parents can participate in so the whole family is inspired to apply the Lord’s instructions to their lives. Enlightening, energizing, and creatively illustrated, The Beatitudes for Children will help you encourage the kids in your life to stay close to Jesus as they grow.

This Week’s Book Recommendation: Homilies Kids Can See by Msgr. Dermot R. Brennan
Children these days, says Msgr. Brennan, respond far more to visual images than to words. Give them something to watch – a puppet, a magic trick, even just a flashcard – and they’ll remember the message. This collection of homilies that have actually been presented to kids of all ages will inspire you with new ideas for reaching out to young minds. An expert magician as well as a successful teacher, Msgr. Brennan shares his simple but amazingly effective techniques, along with the thinking behind them. Easy-to-understand instructions show you exactly how to do each presentation, step-by-step. For any priest who has ever struggled to hold children’s attention, for any teacher who has nearly given up, and for any parent who wonders why the kids won’t listen, this book is a lifesaver.

This Week’s Book Recommendation: Bundles of Faith and Tons of Fun – This latest book by Patricia Mathson is a resource of crafts, prayers, role plays, banners, and much more to enhance a child’s walk in faith with Jesus throughout the entire year. The material in Bundles of Faith and Tons of Fun: Easy Activities, Prayers, and Projects for Children is suitable for pre-school to middle-school age. The ideas are easy to use and adapt to any religious education setting in school, parish, or home. The materials required for specific lessons and activities are close at hand, and preparation time is minimal. This is a perfect resource to enhance and supplement any religious education curriculum and any course. In each idea, Mathson emphasizes how Jesus is present. Children are able to recognize in their work, prayer, and sharing, how Jesus is truly with them. Prayer chains, pantomimes, giving trees, May Day crownings, and holiday adventures are all part of the creative offering which are truly tons of fun as they share bundles of faith with the children.
