My two favorite moments during last night’s Academy Awards show – Sandra Bullock’s speech thanking moms, and this commercial for the new iPad. I know it’s Lent and we’re not ever supposed to be coveting things, but this commercial has me even more anxious for the release of Apple’s latest toy:

I was very touched last night by Sandra Bullock’s remarks during her Academy Awards acceptance speech. Her taking time to thank “the moms who take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from” immediately made me think of the many adoptive and foster moms I know, including a personal hero of mine, Heidi Hess Saxton of the Extraordinary Moms Network.

Have you taken time lately to thank your mom, your friends who are moms, and the many out there caring for children “no matter where they come from”?

Stronger

Tonight, Greg and I had a “date night” to attend a “Sweethearts Dinner”. The event was fantastic, a good time with special friends. The keynote was delivered by our incredible Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin and her husband Paul, who gave a funny, uplifting and inspirational talk. They shared about their courtship, their marriage, and their commitment to one another and to the city of Fresno. Calling each of us to be “heralds” for a city that is frequently maligned (and wrongly so, in my opinion), they truly made me proud to be a Fresnan, a Christian, and a wife and mom.

During the course of this great evening, we had the opportunity to hear Jackie Kelley sing her new song “Stronger”. I was able to find this video of Jackie online, and I’m so happy to share it with you. There is something about the words to this song that truly captures what’s in my heart these days. God has blessed my life so abundantly, and I wake up every day wanting to do more for those around me as a sign of my love for Him.

Catholic Company Contest & My New Book

Catholic Kid Collecting Teddy Bears for Haitian Relief Effort

Meet twelve year old Blare Gooch, a Catholic elementary school student who’s using his big heart to reach out to children suffering in Haiti after the earthquake. Blare is making the rounds on the media, looking to collect 2,000 teddy bears to send to the orphans and other children suffering in Haiti. Blare is well on his way to meeting his goal by March 15th – if you’d like to help by donating a new or gently used bear or funds to help with storage and shipping, contact Blare’s mom Lisa or ship your bears to the following drop off locations:

Amazing Adoration Video

I stumbled across this video this morning right after my interview with Gus Lloyd on Sirius/XM’s The Catholic Channel. Regardless of how many interviews I’ve done, I still get a bit nervous prior to each one and try to take a few moments of quiet prayer to set my heart right. Afterward, there is inevitably a rush of emotion and thanksgiving, for the amazing opportunities God is placing in my path. This morning, during that “aftermath”, I ran across this amazing video. I hope you can spend two minutes enjoying it, and find some quiet time in your life this week for moments in front of the Eucharist. The song is by Rich Dittus. Enjoy!

BUMP+

I have an interview request in to the makers of the new web “reality” series BUMP+, but while we wait for their responses, I thought I’d share the pilot episode. Honestly, my jury is still out on this project. I’m still uncomfortable with the thought of leaving the “decision” about life in the hands of a viewing audience. Here’s the basic layout for this show, taken from the BIUMP+ site:

In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court gave women a choice. Thirty-seven years later, we’re giving them a voice. A day after 300,000+ marched for life in Washington D.C., I welcome anything that promotes a culture of life. I guess my ultimate question is, does BUMP+ do that? Over at Phases of Womanhood, Mary Hasson has shared her very well thought-out and reasoned response to BUMP+. I am going to share a few of the episodes here and invite your take on this use of New Media. Please no comments on the acting, the lighting, the sound or the makeup – I’m simply interested in knowing if how you feel about this type of project and its impact upon the Pro-Life movement?

This past weekend, I had the absolute honor of visiting with the parishioners of my fellow Diocese of Fresno parish St. Joachim’s in Madera, CA. One of their priests, Fr. Rafael Lavilla, OSJ, kindly invited me to give the introductory remarks for their screening of The 13th Day: The True Story of Fatima. Fr. Rafael, an amazing young priest, struck upon the idea of presenting the film as a fundraiser for the parish’s wonderful Theology of the Body group.

I teased Father Rafael that he should go into the car sales business – when he first invited me to speak, I must admit that I doubted how many people would show up to church on Saturday night to watch a black and white film about Our Lady of Fatima.

Well, Fr. Rafael and the families of St. Joachim’s proved me wrong! Over three hundred tickets were sold and the parish hall was packed to capacity to watch this amazing movie. After the film, we were treated to a very informative question and answer session by another of the Oblate priests from the parish.

If you haven’t already heard Catholic Moments Podcast #129, be sure to check out a press conference that provides a tremendous overview of the making of The 13th Day.

I love visiting parishes and must say that my trip to St. Joachim’s gave me an even greater desire to do more of this in the year ahead. I want to congratulate Fr. Rafael and his TOBers on an outstanding event. You managed to raise funds while providing a fun, inspirational, and educational evening for your entire parish family. I hope I’m invited to your next Movie Night!
