I have came to a happy compromise with the laundry in my house. Since getting rid of my dryer and replacing it with a couple clothes drying racks, I have found that laundry is almost zen like. I get some exercise and if the sun is sunshining it is the perfect excuse to go outside.

I read somewhere, once upon a time, that we spend as much if not more time on laundry as our foremothers who used a washboard and a clothes line and had to iron just about everything with an iron that had to be heated. In short, as laundry became easier, our wardrobes got bigger and our cleanliness standards got stricter. No longer did a thin apron cover Mom's dress in the kitchen; if her clothes got dirty, just toss them in the wash. No longer did kids wear the same clothes two days in a row. No longer did towels get used all week (and daily bathing became the norm).
