It's been awhile since I read the Kippley classic, but I have to agree with Pam. Now, let me be clear, I was Protestant at the time and we continued to use barrier methods of birth control while doing ecological breastfeeding (my husband wasn't convinced that it was enough). What Sheila gave me was first and foremost an encouragement (largely already given by LLL) to mother my babies in a particular fashion. What she also (along with some of the moms in my LLL group as well as the founding mothers' writing) did was to make me far more comfortable with Catholic teaching. I doubt that I would be Catholic today if it weren't for LLL, and Kippley. They certainly weren't the only influences, but I know that the underlying philosophy of the book made Catholic thought a lot more comprehensible when I encountered it more than a decade after first reading Kippley.

My daughter is now breastfeeding her first baby and she's doing it using Kippley methods. What's difficult for her is that she's not finding the support in her LLL group that I saw in mine, and there simply aren't a lot of Catholic moms for her to talk with about these issues. I'm very pro-LLL (I'm a leader), but I want her to find a group that will actually encourage her in her vocation rather than one that "hand waves" the notion of breastfeeding influencing fertility or that is disdainful of openness to more than one or two children. If she can find that sort of support in LLL fine, but if not I'd rather she found it elsewhere. So, could you tell me whether your Catholic mothers organization has groups all over the country, or is it limited to just some areas. Do you have conferences or other sorts of get togethers? Do you have a Facebook group? In short where is the mini-community that would be the sort of support system for my daughter that LLL was for me?

Before there was “attachment parenting”…before the “organic revolution”…before anyone could measure his own “carbon footprint,” there was Sheila Kippley, promoting ecological breastfeeding, the only truly natural form of baby care there...
